Each NFL team plays 17 regular-season games in the 2026 season, spread over 18 weeks so that every team gets one bye week. Add three preseason games in August and up to four playoff games in January and February, and a team can play as many as 24 games in a season, or 25 if it opened the preseason in the Hall of Fame Game.

The 17-game schedule began in 2021. Before that, teams played 16 games from 1978 through 2020 and 14 games from 1961 through 1977. This page explains how the 2026 season is laid out, the formula that decides who plays whom, why some teams get nine home games, how the preseason and playoffs fit around the regular season, the record international slate, and where the talk of an 18-game season actually stands. If you are new to the sport, American football for beginners covers the basics first.

The 2026 NFL season at a glance

The league has 32 teams in two conferences, the AFC and the NFC, and each conference has four divisions of four teams. Every team plays 17 regular-season games, which makes 272 games in total. The arithmetic: 32 teams times 17 games is 544 team appearances, and since every game involves two teams, 544 / 2 = 272.

The key dates for the 2026 season, from the NFL's schedule release and its list of important dates:

  • Kickoff: Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with the New England Patriots at the Seattle Seahawks, a rematch of Super Bowl LX.
  • Bye weeks: from Week 5 through Week 14.
  • Thanksgiving: a tripleheader on Thursday, November 26.
  • Christmas Day: two games in Week 16.
  • Week 18: Saturday, January 9, and Sunday, January 10, 2027, with all 16 games between division rivals for the 17th straight year.
  • Playoffs: Wild Card Weekend from January 16, 2027, ending with Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027.

A regular-season game can still end in a tie if overtime does not settle it, so a team's record might read 10-6-1 rather than a clean two numbers. Our page on NFL overtime rules explains when that happens.

How the 17-game scheduling formula works

The NFL uses a fixed formula, published by NFL Football Operations, and every team's 17 games break down the same way:

  • 6 division games: home and away against each of its three division rivals.
  • 4 games against all four teams of one division in its own conference, on a three-year rotation.
  • 4 games against all four teams of one division in the other conference, on a four-year rotation.
  • 2 games against the teams from the two remaining divisions in its own conference that finished in the same place the season before (first against first, second against second, and so on).
  • 1 game, the 17th, against a same-place team from a division in the other conference that it is not already scheduled to play.

Add them up: 6 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 17. The first four lines are the old 16-game formula; the same-place game against the other conference is the piece added in 2021.

The rotations mean a team sees every division in its own conference at least once every three years and every division in the other conference once every four years. Only the two same-place games and the 17th game depend on how a team finished, which is why a division champion is guaranteed three games against other first-place teams the following year.

Worked example: an AFC East team in 2026

The NFL's 2026 opponent list paired the AFC East with the AFC West inside the conference, with the NFC North across conferences, and with the NFC West for the 17th game. So any AFC East team, the Buffalo Bills for instance, plays:

  • 6 games against its three AFC East rivals, twice each
  • 4 games against the four AFC West teams
  • 4 games against the four NFC North teams
  • 1 game each against the AFC North and AFC South teams that finished in the same division place in 2025
  • 1 game against the NFC West team that finished in the same place in 2025

That is 6 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 17 games. Fourteen of the 17 opponents were known years in advance from the rotation, and only three depended on the 2025 standings. The dates and kickoff times came later: the full 2026 schedule was released on May 14, 2026.

Home games: why some teams get nine

Seventeen is an odd number, so the home and road games cannot split evenly. Each team has 3 home division games, 2 home games in each four-game division set, and 1 home game among the two same-place games, which makes 3 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 8. The 17th game decides who gets a ninth.

The host conference for the 17th game alternates each year. The AFC hosted it in 2021, the first 17-game season, and again in 2025, when the NFC teams had eight home games. In 2026 the NFC is the home conference, so every NFC team has nine home games and every AFC team has eight.

Football Operations also points out that the preseason balances this out over time. In a year when a team hosts nine regular-season games it hosts one preseason game, and in a year with eight regular-season home games it hosts two. Either way, the usual total is ten home dates.

International games complicate the picture. Since 2022, teams from the conference that is due a ninth home game are among the group designated to play a neutral-site game abroad, so some of those ninth home games end up being played in another country.

Bye weeks and the 18-week calendar

Seventeen games take 18 weeks because every team gets exactly one week off, the bye. In 2026 the byes fall between Week 5 and Week 14, and with 32 byes spread over those ten weeks, an average of about three teams are off in each of them (32 / 10 = 3.2).

Games are spread across Thursday nights, Sundays and Monday nights, plus holiday and late-season Saturday games, and 2026 adds the league's first game on Thanksgiving Eve, Green Bay at the Los Angeles Rams on November 25. The game clock is the same in all of them; our guide to how long a football game lasts explains why each one fills about three hours of real time.

Byes matter to fans in a practical way. Fantasy football managers have to replace players whose teams are off that week, as our explainer on how fantasy football works describes,.

Preseason games: three for most teams

Before the regular season comes the preseason, a set of exhibition games that do not count in the standings. Coaches use them to evaluate rosters before the cut to 53 players, which in 2026 fell on August 30.

  • Since 2021, most teams play three preseason games.
  • From 1978 through 2020, teams played four. The fourth was dropped when the regular season grew to 17 games.
  • The two teams in the Hall of Fame Game play four. In 2026 that game was the Arizona Cardinals against the Carolina Panthers in Canton, Ohio, on August 6.

According to NFL.com, 2026 was the fifth straight season in which 30 teams played three preseason games and two played four.

Playoff games and the Super Bowl

After Week 18, 14 of the 32 teams move on to the playoffs, seven from each conference, and only the No. 1 seed in each conference gets a first-round bye. The format, seeding and tiebreakers are covered in detail in our guide to how many teams make the NFL playoffs. The short version for counting games:

  • Wild Card round: 6 games, January 16 to 18, 2027
  • Divisional round: 4 games, January 23 and 24
  • Conference championships: 2 games, January 31
  • Super Bowl LXI: 1 game, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California

That is 13 playoff games in total. A wild-card team that goes all the way plays four of them; a No. 1 seed plays three.

So the most games any team can play in the 2026 season is 3 preseason + 17 regular season + 4 playoff = 24. For the Cardinals and Panthers, with their extra preseason game, the ceiling is 4 + 17 + 4 = 25. A team that misses the playoffs plays 20, or 21 if it was in Canton.

International games in 2026

Every international game is a regular-season game that counts in the standings like any other; one team is listed as the host even though the stadium is neutral. The 2026 season has nine international games, the most the NFL has played abroad in a season, across seven countries:

  • Week 1, September 10: Rams and 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia, the first regular-season game in Australia
  • Week 3, September 27: Ravens and Cowboys at Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Week 4, October 4: Colts and Commanders at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London
  • Week 5, October 11: Eagles and Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London
  • Week 6, October 18: Texans and Jaguars at Wembley Stadium, London
  • Week 7, October 25: Steelers and Saints at the Stade de France, Paris
  • Week 9, November 8: Bengals and Falcons at the Bernabéu, Madrid
  • Week 10, November 15: Patriots and Lions in Munich, Germany
  • Week 11, November 22: Vikings and 49ers at Estadio Banorte, Mexico City

The first regular-season game played outside the United States was in Mexico City on October 2, 2005, when the Arizona Cardinals beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-14 at Estadio Azteca. Today, according to Football Operations, every team is guaranteed an international game at least once every eight years. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in February 2026 that the league's eventual target is 16 international games a year, enough for every team to play one.

How the NFL season grew, and where 18 games stands

The schedule has grown in steps, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's season-by-season table:

  • 1947 to 1960: 12 games
  • 1961 to 1977: 14 games
  • 1978 to 2020: 16 games, after owners voted in March 1977 to expand, alongside a four-game preseason
  • 2021 to today: 17 games, approved by owners on March 30, 2021, with the preseason cut to three games

An 18-game regular season has been discussed for years, and as of November 2026 it is not approved. The idea the league has floated would add an 18th regular-season game and drop one of the three preseason games, keeping each team's total at 20. A second bye week and larger rosters are among the issues that would have to be negotiated.

The obstacle is the players. The length of the season is set in the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NFL Players Association, and that agreement runs through the 2030 season. At his Super Bowl LX news conference in February 2026, Goodell said there had been no formal discussions and that "it is not a given that we will do that." The union's interim executive director, David White, said players have "no appetite" for an 18th game.

The 2027 season also looks set at 17 games. In July 2026 the league fixed Super Bowl LXII in Atlanta for February 13, 2028, a date that Front Office Sports reported effectively keeps 2027 on the 17-game calendar, since an extra week would have pushed the game later.
